What are Brownfields?

Brownfields are properties that have been abandoned or are underutilized such as former schools, fire stations, hospitals, hotels, dry cleaners, or aging commercial buildings that possess significant redevelopment potential. Their reuse, however, is often complicated by the presence or perception of environmental contamination resulting from past commercial or industrial activities. Prior to the establishment of Brownfields programs, many of these sites remained idle for extended periods due to concerns over public health risks and potential liability.

Why is redevelopment important?

Brownfield redevelopment helps turn old or unused properties into safe, useful places for our community. By cleaning up environmental concerns, these sites can be transformed into new businesses, parks, housing, or public spaces that benefit everyone. Revitalizing these areas strengthens neighborhoods, supports local jobs, and creates a healthier, more welcoming community.
